What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps clients understand and change patterns of thinking and behaviour that contribute to emotional distress. In my clinical work, I routinely draw on a range of core CBT techniques, including:

-
Cognitive restructuring – helping clients identify, evaluate, and modify unhelpful thoughts and core beliefs.

-
Behavioural experiments – collaboratively testing out beliefs in real-world scenarios to gather evidence and challenge assumptions.

-
Exposure techniques – supporting clients to gradually face feared situations or memories in a controlled and therapeutic way.

-
Behavioural activation – particularly effective with depression, encouraging re-engagement with meaningful activities.

-
Problem-solving and coping skills training – developing practical strategies for dealing with current difficulties.

-
Relapse prevention planning – ensuring clients are equipped to maintain progress and manage future challenges.

CBT is a highly versatile model and is supported by a strong evidence base across a wide range of conditions
What is Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)?
EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help individuals process and resolve distressing life experiences and the emotional difficulties associated with them. Originally developed to treat trauma, EMDR is now widely used with a broad range of clinical presentations. EMDR works on the premise that psychologically distressing events can become "stuck" in the brain’s memory networks, leading to ongoing symptoms such as anxiety, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or avoidance.
Using bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones—while the client focuses on a troubling memory, EMDR helps the brain reprocess the experience, reducing its emotional charge and allowing for healthier cognitive integration.
The 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy:
History Taking & Treatment Planning – Identifying significant life events, current difficulties, and treatment targets.
Preparation – Establishing safety and stability, building therapeutic rapport, and teaching self-soothing strategies.
Assessment – Selecting a target memory and identifying the associated image, negative belief, emotions, and body sensations.
Desensitisation – Engaging in bilateral stimulation while focusing on the memory, allowing distress to reduce over time.
Installation – Strengthening a more adaptive, positive belief to replace the previously held negative cognition.
Body Scan – Noticing and resolving any residual physical discomfort linked to the memory.
Closure – Ensuring emotional stability at the end of each session and reinforcing self-regulation techniques.
Re-evaluation – Reviewing progress, assessing if further processing is needed, and identifying new targets if appropriate.
